Job Summary:

The nurse in the PACU provides expert professional nursing care for the patient during the pre and post-operative course. The nurse assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the care of the patient. The nurse will assure that the patient is prepared for discharge to a home environment by providing the necessary education to the patient and their responsible caregiver.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirements include:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Current State licensure and CPR certification
  • Two years of Recovery Room, Intensive Care or Emergency Room experience is desired
  • Preferred accomplishments include experience in Orthopedics, ENT and out-patient surgery

Skills/Abilities:

  • The applicant must be able to communicate effectively, and have an ability to work compatibly with all physicians and staff
  • The preferred applicant will possess strong organizational skills
  • A clear understanding of the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness in an ambulatory surgery center
  • The applicant needs to have the knowledge and clinical skills to perform the job duties of a PACU nurse
  • Must be able to make quick assessments of patients and be able to handle emergency situations appropriately

Physical guidelines include:

  • Ability to stand/walk for up to eight hours per day
  • Bend, stoop, twist
  • Assist patients in turning, rising form recliners and stretchers, assist patients in and out of wheelchairs, push wheelchairs and assist with the moving of patients on and off the operating room table
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Work with all members of the health care team to provide optimal care to the patient, throughout their surgical experience
  2. Maintain a friendly, positive and caring attitude with all patients, physicians and staff
  3. Maintain excellent physical and mental health
  4. Assist in patient education during all phases of their experience at the Center
  5. Assist in assuring that the proper supplies, instruments and equipment are available for the procedure
  6. Assist in assuring that the equipment is functioning properly
  7. Monitor use of and input for all supplies used during the recovery period in the computer system under case history. Assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies/ time used
  8. Document appropriately the care that is given to the patient
  9. Continue education to meet state requirements and keep current with health care
  10. Display professionalism at work and in the community, as a representative of the Center
  11. Take an active role on committees within the department and throughout the clinic
  12. Identifies actual and potential risk to patients and others and takes action to minimize or eliminate risk and maximize safety
  13. Performs charge nurse responsibilities as staffing demands and as requested

Job Duties:

  1. Prepare for arrival of patients to the surgery center by making sure that proper supplies and equipment are available
  2. Review patients charts for health history and to assure that the necessary pre-operative evaluations have been completed. Make sure permission for surgery has been given
  3. Admit and prepare patients for surgery at the Center. Provide ongoing information to the patient and their caregiver to assure that they understand and feel as comfortable as possible
  4. Does assessment of patient, start IV, and administer necessary medications as ordered
  5. Communicate with other health care team members to assure continuity of care in the Center
  6. Receives patient into the recovery room after surgery. Assesses and evaluates the patient and monitors the patient continuously during their recovery phase. Documents the status of the patients and administers care accordingly
  7. Incorporates a sense of wellness by allowing the patient's family to be reunited with them as soon as feasible, and encouraging self-care by the patient
  8. Provides discharge instructions to the patient and their caregiver, asking for confirmation of understanding throughout the giving of instructions
  9. The nurse will document all supplies used during the post-op recovery phase in the computer system under case history
  10. The nurse in PACU will provide follow up assessment of the patients by calling the patients within 72 hours post-op
  11. The nurse is prepared for emergency situations by knowing correct procedures and locations of emergency call system
  12. Monitors that Universal Precautions are maintained
  13. Will complete all necessary documentation on patient’s record
  14. Wipes down gurneys and recliners between patients with hospital grade germicidal solution Remake beds as needed
