This position will assist staff in pre-op, OR and PACU in the safe, effective and efficient care of patients. Assists in the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established federal, state and accreditation standards and facility policies and procedures.  Assists the nurses and physicians in delivering the highest standard of patient care available. Assists the OR staff in the organization and daily function of the operating room in accordance with established federal, state and accreditation standards and facility policies and procedures.  Responsible for instrument decontamination, sterile processing, instrument care and handling and documentation and record keeping related to those activities. Serves as support personnel assisting providers and other personnel as needed, and other collateral duties.

Education/Experience/Licenses/Certificates/Eligibility:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Central sterile or operating room experience required
  • Current BLS
  • Must have either Sterilization Certification, Scrub Tech Certification, or MA

Knowledge:  

  • Working knowledge and experience in a hospital, operating room or ambulatory surgery center
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of the physician and has equipment, instrumentation, medical gases and supplies readily available for all procedures
  • Ability to scrub all types of cases preferred
  • Ensures that an adequate amount of in-house supplies and medical gases are available in accordance with weekly caseload
  • Willingness to assume additional assignments on an as needed basis

  • Keeps operating rooms properly stocked
  • Removes linen, trash and sharps from OR and transports to appropriate storage areas
  • Restocks blanket warmer
  • Assists with patient transport, transfer and lifting using proper body mechanics

  • Identifies opportunities to improve patient safety and participates in projects and programs designed to reduce error and improve safety
  • Has correct knowledge of all OR equipment and supplies
  • Practices and knows aseptic technique
  • Retrieve and stock clean and sterile supplies with in the facility
  • Retrieve and store equipment as needed 
  • Assists staff in pre-op/PACU as needed and directed
  • Assists staff in OR as needed and directed
  • Assures emergency equipment and supplies are available at all times
  • Keeps surgical suites clean, tidy, free of soiled equipment and supplies, and properly stocked

Provides Technical Support Service:

  • Anticipates the need for equipment and supplies
  • Selects equipment and supplies in an organized, cost effective and timely manner
  • Assures all equipment is functioning before use and removes any malfunctioning equipment
  • Demonstrates skill in appropriate use of instruments and equipment
  • Operates mechanical, electrical and air-powered equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions
  • Assures emergency equipment and supplies are available at all times
  • Keeps surgical suites clean, tidy, free of soiled equipment and supplies, and properly stocked
  • Transports patients to and from and within the facility
  • Assists with preoperative patient preparation and postoperative patient discharge (e.g. changing clothes, providing nourishment)
  • Assists with OR turnover and preparation of sterile supplies (e.g. opening, case pulling)
  • Cleans and restocks anesthesia supplies as assigned
  • With additional training, may assist the surgical team as a second scrub person
