The role of the Medical Records Specialist is to maintain the medical records files (charts), provide expedient chart location and information for the physicians and staff, and to act as a troubleshooter in the Medical Records arena. Functions include medical information maintenance and answering of phones.

Responsibilities

Include, but not limited to:

  • Pull and file all charts and out cards
  • Scan medical documents, forms and referral information into the patient electronic chart
  • Copy chart information as requested
  • Locate and deliver all charts as needed
  • Answer phone calls
  • Assist other personnel as directed by department supervisor

Education and Experience

  • High school graduate
  • Medical records experience (desired)

  • Skill in using a computer; type 40 wpm

  • Ability to stand for extended amounts of time
  • Knowledge of HIPAA privacy rules
