Richard Angelo, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at ProOrtho. On October 3, 2017, Dr. Angelo successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, "Proficiency-Based Progression Training - Quality Assured Preparation for the Practice of Surgery" at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland:

The related research (Arthroscopy Association of North America Copernicus Initiative) involved task deconstruction and metric validation for an Arthroscopic Bankart Repair; construct validation for the resulting metrics along with a medium fidelity shoulder simulator and cadaver shoulder; and a prospective, randomized, blinded trial of proficiency-based progression (PBP) training compared with the current training (representing the "Apprenticeship Model"), and with simulator enhanced training without the proficiency requirement. PBP training was demonstrated to be far superior to the other two training curriculums. Anthony Gallagher, PhD, DSc, and Eugene Dempsey, MD of UCC served as his PhD advisors.
