Kenneth Oates, MD, has double board certification in both general orthopedics and sports medicine. He did two fellowships and completed research on knee ligament injuries, biological alternatives to joint replacement, and joint replacement surgery.
He enjoys helping people get back to the activities they enjoy. He feels it is truly a gift to be involved in his patients’ efforts to return to the lifestyle that they have been missing because of injury, wear and tear, or arthritis. Having been active in sports his entire life and having had a number of orthopedic injuries of his own (five surgeries at last count), he tries to keep in mind what it is like to be in the patient’s position.
Dr. Oates is a reviewer and emeritus member of the editorial board for the Arthroscopy scientific journal and has taught courses at the Orthopedic Learning Center for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He lives in Anacortes, where his son and daughter were raised. He is active in the outdoors as a skier, bike rider, and hiker. He is also involved in martial arts and is a third-degree black belt in Shito-Ryu Karate. In college he was on the West Coast champion University of Washington lightweight rowing crew.
