Orthopedic Conditions

Hand and Upper Extremities

A complex system of joints, bones, ligaments, tendons, nerves, and blood vessels within the arms, wrist, and hand. Many conditions don’t require surgery, but in cases where procedures are necessary can be performed with local anesthetics.

Knee

Treatments include nonoperative recommendations, such as injections, medications, weight loss plans, and exercise. Surgical intervention, often joint replacement surgery, may be needed if these areas are sufficiently worn-out.

Orthopedic Trauma

The management of broken bones, often due to high-energy impacts such as a car accident or low-energy impacts with conditions like osteoporosis. Treatments include plates and screws or surgical intervention to heal the bone.

Surgery at Proliance Rainier Orthopedic Institute

The Surgery Center at Rainier is an out-patient surgery center where we identify patients who are good candidates for same-day surgery. With up-to-date technology, our doctors can complete your same-day surgery here and have you recover in the comfort of your own home.

Non-Surgical Procedures at Proliance Rainier Orthopedic Institute

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Building and rooms were clean and tidy. Front desk ladies were friendly, and I so enjoyed seeing their smiling faces. You can tell they enjoy what they are doing. My doctor was very sweet too. Not much wait time before being seen, so I was very pleased with that.

Preparing for Your Surgery

GENERAL SURGERY INFORMATION

As a patient awaiting surgery, there are critical details you should be aware of before your arrival. Please carefully read these instructions, along with the pre-operative and post-operative instructions below, to ensure a smooth experience. We eagerly anticipate serving you as a patient and trust that this information will address any questions or concerns you may have. Feel free to reach out to us with any additional inquiries.

CHILDREN AND SURGERY

We are unable to accommodate young children as guests in the surgery center. If your child is the patient and he/she is under 18 years of age, a parent or guardian must remain in the facility at all times. If you have a power of attorney or custodial responsibility you must bring appropriate documentation.

LABORATORY

If you have been instructed to have laboratory tests, EKGs or X-rays, please have these done 7-14 days prior to surgery.

Pre-Operative Instructions

PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Do not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery, unless instructed otherwise by the anesthesiologist. This includes refraining from gum, mints, hard candy or water.
  • Do not take medication unless instructed by the anesthesiologist or pre-op nurse.
  • Your anesthesiologist will call you the day or evening before surgery to answer questions and provide instructions.
  • Wear comfortable clothing.
  • Leave valuables and jewelry at home – including piercings.
  • Do not wear makeup.
  • If you have removable dental work (dentures, partials, etc.) or contact lenses, be prepared to remove them before surgery if requested by anesthesia.
  • You must have someone available to receive discharge instructions and drive you home. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home due to the medication given during surgery.
  • To ensure the privacy of all patients, we ask that you bring only one guest with you for support.
  • We will call you one business day before surgery to tell you the exact time you should arrive. We may adjust your arrival time in the case of a cancellation or if another surgery is running long.
  • Stop consumption of all forms of ASPIRIN, ADVIL, IBUPROFEN, ALEVE, FISH OIL, VITAMIN E or other over-the-counter blood-thinning medications 7-10 days prior to surgery.
  • Drink plenty of water the day before surgery to make IV placement easier.
  • Take a shower the morning of surgery.

Post-Operative Instructions

POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

  • We will inform your escort of the approximate time that your surgery will conclude and when they will be needed to meet with the surgeon. They should be available by cell phone if they are not in the waiting room.
  • If your surgery is expected to take less than one hour to complete, we request that your escort stay in the waiting room. If your surgery is expected to take more than one hour to complete, your escort may leave the waiting room; however, we request they be available by cell phone and remain within 20 minutes of the facility.
  • Written instructions specific to your surgery will be provided to you and your escort prior to your discharge from the surgery center.
  • We recommend that someone stay with you for 24 hours after surgery to monitor your care.
  • Pain medication may cause constipation. You will need to drink plenty of water, eat foods high in fiber and possibly consider an over-the-counter stool softener while taking pain medication.
