What is a bunion?
A bunion is the painful bump that can form at the bottom of the big toe. The bump can become larger with time and the big toe deviates towards the smaller toes.
When should I consider surgery?
Surgery can be considered when a bunion causes pain and dysfunction to the point that it affects your quality of life despite having tried non-surgical treatment options (such as toe spacers, wider shoes, shoe modifications, etc.).
What is minimally invasive bunion surgery?
MIS bunion correction is a cutting-edge surgical technique for correcting bunions. It involves small incisions (each requiring a single stitch) as opposed to the larger incisions associated with more traditional bunion correction techniques. Special instruments and x-rays are used to perform the surgery. With MIS techniques, damage to muscles, tendons, and other surrounding structures is minimized.
With minimally invasive bunion surgery, you can expect the following benefits:
- Earlier weight-bearing (you can start putting weight on your foot in a stiff protective shoe on the same day as surgery)
- Fewer scars (you will have a few “pokehole” incisions that are a few millimeters in size – each only requiring a single suture)
- Less swelling
- Less pain (with the goal of minimizing narcotic use)
- Lower chance of infection
Dr. Yi is passionate about minimally invasive surgical techniques that deliver quality results and enjoys teaching techniques to other surgeons at courses and labs.
