Overview

Position Summary

The role of the Medical Coding Specialist is to provide an accurate and complete review of professional charges processed for billing, insurance filing and revenue reporting.

The Medical Coding Specialist is expected to perform position-related duties that include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Comply with all legal requirements regarding coding procedures and practices
  • Assign and sequence all codes for services rendered
  • Collaborate with billing department to ensure all bills are satisfied in a timely manner
  • Communicate with insurance companies about coding errors and disputes
  • Submit statistical data for analysis and research by other departments
  • Contact physicians and other health care professionals with questions about treatments or diagnostic tests given to patients with regard to coding procedures
  • Complete adjustments to patient accounts
  • Charge entry
  • Write protest/appeal letters to insurance companies
  • Other duties assigned by Billing Manager

Education/Experience

 

  • Minimum 5 years medical coding experience
  • Certification preferred prior to hire date
  • Excellent typing and 10-key speed and accuracy
  • Commitment to high level of customer service
  • Familiarity with ICD-10 codes and procedures

 

 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

 

  • Ability to communicate clearly, and possess excellent phone skills in order to establish/maintain cooperative relationships with patients, Physicians and staff
  • Efficient gathering and effective comprehension of operative reports and proper compliance
  • Navigate and comprehension of computer software systems in office setting
  • Must maintain knowledge of clinic, insurance industry practices and medical terminology
  • Problem solving skills
  • Ability to read EOB’s (explanation of benefits)
  • Knowledge of CPT and ICD10 coding
  • Skill in basic data entry; 10-key proficiency
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Skill in organizing and reporting information that is accurate and complete
  • Knowledge of basic math skills
  • Understanding and respecting the need for confidentiality
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all staff
  • Ability to prepare records in accordance with detailed instructions
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and on the phone
  • Consistency and timeliness in attendance
  • NextGen/Amkai/EPIC knowledge desired

Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit. Work is performed in an office environment. Some bending and stretching required. Use of telephone is required. Manual dexterity required for use of computer keyboard. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
