Southwest Seattle Surgery Center, a division of Proliance Surgeons in Burien is a two-room freestanding surgery center focusing on the specialties of Orthopedics, ENT & Facial Plastics. We are looking for a team focused, hardworking Charge Nurse. We are specifically looking for someone who is adaptable with strong operating room experience and the ability to lead a great team.

Flexible day shift hours are available: no nights, no holidays, no weekends, no call!

Position Summary

The Charge Nurse, under minimum supervision, provides safe, quality patient care in the operating room. The Charge Nurse is accountable for the assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating of patient care in the operating room as well as do staffing, quality assurance, breaks/lunches, and assist the administrator with additional duties as assigned. The Charge Nurse functions as a patient advocate utilizing the Patient’s Bill of Rights and is responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes in accordance with the mission of the Center.

  • Assesses patient status on admission to the operating room, and on a continuing basis.
  • Provides safe, therapeutic and quality patient care to the intra-operative patient by utilizing the nursing process and nursing diagnosis in a timely manner and by setting appropriate priorities. Coordinates nursing
  • interventions to enhance achievement of expected outcomes and to ensure readiness for discharge.
  • Ensures provision of patient care daily in an organized and timely manner.
  • Utilizes nursing care standards when planning and implementing patient care.
  • Communicates appropriate information to surgeons and anesthesiologists concerning patient care.
  • Safely carries out physician’s orders correctly and promptly, documenting all activities.
  • Completes intra-operative procedures safely, providing proper post-operative discharge instructions as necessary.
  • With the appropriate training, provides conscious sedation under the authority of an approved supervising physician.
  • Initiates and participates in patient and family education. Assesses learning needs according to patient’s level of understanding and readiness to learn.
  • Displays an understanding of each patient’s cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturity in the assessment, treatment and care of the patient.
  • Demonstrates complete understanding of established emergency procedures for the Center.
  • Demonstrates the ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to make decisions concerning Center based problems.
  • Participates in the orientation of nursing and ancillary staff as requested.
  • Participates in developing standardized patient education programs as requested.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities.
  • Practices infection control and standard precautions as instructed.
  • Completes all employee/patient incident documentation in a thorough and timely manner.


  • Fosters a positive and professional environment by interacting with all persons in a considerate, helpful and courteous manner.
  • Maintains confidentiality of Center and patient information as required by Center policy.
  • Displays a caring and responsive attitude and conducts all activities respecting patient, family and employee rights and expectations.
  • Documents all patient information according to established standards of care, policies and procedures.
  • Provides an accurate, concise and pertinent report about the patient’s condition and response to care to relief personnel.
  • Attends and participates in all applicable training and development workshops scheduled by the Center.
  • Maintains and displays appropriate knowledge of professional development through printed material or other sources.
  • Attends professional training seminars when appropriate for job development and shares information with other staff members.
  • Assists in orientation of new personnel.
  • Acts as a resource person to other members of the staff.
  • Ability to provide a unit-based in-service, as requested.
  • Participates in Center Marketing as requested.
  • Participates in the Quality Improvement Program activities including identification of opportunities for cost reductions and efficiencies.
  • Works to achieve and maintain regulatory certification and accreditation of the Center.
  • Maintains dress and appearance according to the Center dress code.
  • Diffuses/resolves conflict by appropriately communicating with those involved.
  • Accepts constructive criticism and gives suggestions in a professional manner.
  • Maintains required professional licensure.
  • Practices infection control and standard precautions as instructed.
  • Demonstrates the willingness to assume charge nurse responsibility as assigned.


  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Washington State Nursing license.
  • Successful completion of BCLS.
  • ACLS required and PALS certification preferred.
  • Two years intra-operative experience, preferably in an ambulatory surgery center.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills in order to facilitate effective interaction with a variety of health care professionals and personnel.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and have the capability to organize and prioritize work efficiently to achieve the Center goals and desired patient outcomes.
  • Prior knowledge of surgical instrumentation and peri-operative equipment.
  • Ability to flex work hours as needed and/or requested by management.
