Overview

Position Summary

The PACU RN performs nursing care for the patient in the immediate postoperative/post anesthesia period, assessing and documenting patient’s status upon arrival in the recovery room. They provide nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered, monitoring patient and informing surgeon or anesthetist of observed complications. Functions as a patient advocate utilizing the Patient’s Rights and Responsibilities. Demonstrates professional growth and development by accepting responsibility and accountability for one’s nursing practice.

• Organizes nursing activities efficiently.
• Uses equipment effectively by anticipating patient needs and providing appropriate care.
• Confirms that proper techniques and procedures are used according to accepted standards of practice.
• Assists in managing inventory of supplies, drugs and equipment to maintain availability and stock levels in the postoperative area.
• Maintains order and cleanliness of postoperative area.
• Perform pre-operative nursing assessment of patient, start IV and ordered medications and prepares patient for the operating room.
• Performs safe and individualized nursing care for the patient in the immediate postoperative/post anesthesia period.
• Assesses and documents the patient’s physical and emotional status upon arrival in the recovery room.
• Documents post anesthesia care and identity of second person in the recovery room during the patient’s recovery from anesthesia/sedation according to approved policies and procedures.
• Provides nursing care to meet patient needs related to surgical condition and type of anesthesia administered.
• Monitors patients and informs surgeon or anesthetist of observed complications.
• Performs thorough postoperative patient assessment prior to discharge of the patient.
• Assists in assessing the physical and emotional status of the patient in preparation for discharge.
• Performs discharge teaching to patient and family member/caregiver prior to discharge.
• Performs both pre-operative and post-operative patient phone calls when assigned.

• Great interpersonal skills; demonstrating patience, composure and cooperation; working well with all patients, physicians and staff.
• Understanding of and adherence to all safety, risk management and precautionary procedures, including the consistent respect for confidentiality (HIPAA)
• Computer skills and knowledge
• Enjoys fast-paced ASC environment
• Critical thinking skills
• Maintain professionalism in stressful situations

• Graduate of accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred
• Current Registered Nurse license in the state of Washington
• BLS upon hire
• ACLS certification within 30 days
• CNOR certification preferred
• Previous RN orthopedic and/or ASC experience preferred

• Required to stand and walk continuously
• Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds; frequent lifting of up to 25 – 30 pounds

• High frequency of telephone usage and computer keyboard
• Ability to see, hear, and speak continuously at a level to meet all essential functions of the job
• Ability to prioritize and process with accuracy
• Work is of high attention and mental demands including the ability to prioritize and process with accuracy
