Physician Assistant

Position Summary

The PA-C will be responsible for assisting the physicians in all aspects of a busy orthopedic multi-subspecialty surgeon practice. Physician Assistant will work closely with one physician with time divided between surgical first assist and clinic. This role includes patient care in the clinic, the hospital units and the outpatient operating room. A successful candidate will provide direct clinical, surgical and administrative support to the surgeon.

Clinic Duties:
• Evaluation of new patients to include H&P, order and evaluate diagnostic studies, and develop treatment plan as appropriate.
• Perform pre-operative evaluations.
• Provide follow-up and postoperative care on established patients, re-evaluating and modifying treatment plan as indicated
• All office visits will be documented by a dictated chart note and all other patient contact will be documented by a dictated or hand written note.
• Attend to requests for new or renewal of medications.
• Help in the development of protocols and standards of care.
• Review and complete disability, insurance, and other forms.
• Answer and return patients’ and other care providers’ telephone requests.

Hospital Duties:
• Make rounds on patients, evaluating and modifying their treatment plans, and completing appropriate documentation in compliance with hospital requirements and guidelines.
• Admit, discharge and transfer patients, completing appropriate evaluations, documentation, and procedures in compliance with hospital and receiving institution’s requirements and guidelines.

Surgical Assist Duties:
• “Assisting” may include 1st or 2nd surgical assist for the surgeon; assist the anesthesiologist and Operating Room staff as appropriate, moving and positioning the patient and other activities which might facilitate best patient care. “Assisting” also includes preoperative evaluation of patient as may be indicated, postoperative orders and patient care documentation in compliance with hospital or surgery center guidelines.

On Call Duties:
• Weekend and week night call with backup by attending physician when physician is on call.
• Call consists of taking afterhours urgent telephone calls from clinic patients and calls from the nursing staff or other hospital personnel regarding inpatient care.
• Emergency department call will be managed by the physician although the PA may be asked to see a patient in the ED at times or to admit a patient from the ED.
• On-call duties may include the need for the PA to assist the orthopedist with emergent or urgent surgery.

• Must be able to speak, read and write the English language
• Must be skilled in performance of basic computer/keyboard functions
• Must be able to communicate effectively
• Must be able to organize work and establish priorities

• Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program
• Current Washington State Physician Assistant license
• Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
• Current BLS certification
• Current CPR certification

Orthopedic and/or ASC experience preferred. New grads welcome to apply.

Required to stand and walk continuously. Work is of heavy demand with lifting of up to 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying objects up to 25-30 pounds. Activities include frequent stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and occasional kneeling, crawling, and squatting. High frequency of telephone usage and computer keyboarding is present. Ability to see, hear, and speak continuously at a level to meet all essential functions of the job. Work is of high attention and mental demands including the ability to prioritize and process with accuracy.
