Established in 1990 as Lakewood Orthopaedic Surgeons, Puget Sound Orthopaedics serves the Puget Sound region with comprehensive orthopaedic care in musculoskeletal disorders. Our team comprises of 18 physicians with specialties ranging from joint replacement, shoulder care, spinal care, hand and upper extremity treatment, to sports medicine and podiatric care. They work with our certified physician’s assistants and a 100-member support staff to ensure a high level of contact and ongoing patient education. We work together with the centralized goal of delivering expert, individualized and compassionate care to every patient.

Position Summary

The surgical tech assists the surgeon by providing and controlling the sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment required during surgical intervention. The position is responsible for assuring that instruments and supplies are cleaned, sterilized, and available when needed by physicians.

  • Assists the RN in opening sterile supplies and prepares for each operative procedure
  • Assists surgeons during procedure according to prescribed standards
  • Assists and anticipates the needs of the surgeon
  • Sets up OR table, instruments and supplies according to the type of surgery
  • Maintains correct count of sponges and needles, as directed
  • Maintains aseptic technique at all time, as dictated by accepted standards
  • Assists in maintenance and care of specimens, as directed
  • Assists in application of dressings, casts, and in moving patients, as directed
  • Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, and supplies as directed in procedure
  • Compiles and makes available all necessary supplies needed for procedures
  • Prepares surgical trays, instruments, equipment, and supplies as directed in procedures
  • Assists in inventory storage and retrieval of supplies and equipment
  • Assists with emergency procedures, as directed
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient and facility communications and documentation
  • Communicates a positive and caring attitude toward patients, peers, staff and all contacts
  • Seeks guidance, direction, and assistance when needed

  • Graduation from a surgical technologist training program
  • Surgical Technologist Registration with the State of WA
  • One year of previous on the job experience performing surgical technologist duties preferred
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Current BLS certification


  • Must be able to communicate effectively
  • Must have knowledge of medical terminology
  • Must be able to organize work and establish procedures
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language
  • Must be skilled in performance of basic computer/keyboard functions

  • Required to sit, stand and walk continuously
  • Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds
  • Frequent stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and occasional kneeling, crawling and squatting
  • High frequency of telephone usage and computer keyboard
  • Ability to see, hear, and speak continuously at a level to meet all essential functions of the job
  • Ability to prioritize and process with accuracy
